Our Roots
The evolution of toLabor and what the changes mean are explained in this letter from Therese Hak-Kuhn to members of ALACE.
The Organization of Labor Assistants for Birth Options and Resources-t.o.L.a.b.o.r. has had a very long history which began in Boulder Co in 1977 under the name Informed Home Birth, eventually moving to Ann Arbor MI, where it grew into a larger organization known as Informed Home Birth/ Informed Birth & Parenting. In 1994, it once again transitioned by moving to Cambridge MA where ALACE took root.
It is time once again for new growth and as an organization we have reached a decision that we feel will serve all the members of the community best and maintain the integrity of the LAT program. I will be taking that portion of the ALACE organization out on my own under a new name; The Organization of Labor Assistants for Birth Options & Resources ~ toLabor. I am very excited and grateful for the opportunity to continue this phenomenal work!
I have been teaching the ALACE Labor Assistant Training program since 1996, having taught over 1500 women (and some men!) and I have been the Director of the LAT program for 5 years. I want to reassure you that nothing will change except the name of the organization and until the name is fully recognized throughout the population of interested parties, the name of ALACE and toLabor will be synonymous. The women and men of the past, present and future can refer to themselves as being ALACE trained/certified as well as toLabor trained/certified.
Again, I want to reassure you that the program will not change and in fact will be able to grow in a healthy manner with a stronger foundation for that growth.
I want to express my gratitude to each of you for understanding how important this work really is and for desiring to actively participate in the change that needs to occur for the well-being of babies, women, and their families.
I look forward to meeting you soon
